American Jewelers Institute

Training for the 21st Century Jewelers

"Old World Philosophy and modern techniques!"

Lost Wax Casting:

This jewelry schools course will in just four short months train you to become a bench jeweler capable creating your own jewelry. You will custom design your own pieces for casting, clean and polish these rings, learn how to properly set stones, and make molds to duplicate your designs. Casting precious metals is an ancient art form. Today the technology is highly advanced  which requires knowledge of equipment as well as correct procedures, all of which is covered in AJI's jewelry design school. All aspects of wax carving and casting methods will be learned, as well as mold making for duplication of your masterpiece.

Introduction to Jewelry Manufacturing:

Bronze was first smelted in 2500 BC, Egyptians developed lost wax casting around 1500 BC, Etruscans mastered granulation 500 BC, in the Renaissance era, goldsmithing was part of a classical education.

Most of our students come to us with little or no experience in the jewelry industry. You will  learn  the theory behind jewelry making but more importantly you will receive  hands on training to develop your skills to become a part of the ever growing jewelry industry with a rich and wonderful history.

Graduation May of 2001

No short cut!

Jewelers in Europe take eight to ten years as an apprentice to learn their trade. Here in America we do not require such a lengthy training period. We only require an apprenticeship for up to three years. You might have considered one week to one month short term courses offered by other schools, and we have even considered them ourselves. But in respect to the time one is going to put into a career in this industry we prefer the old fashioned way, hard work, observation, practice and discipline. Most of our students feel the four months they spend with us goes by too quickly. Sadly we are sorry to see them leave as well. All of our students take the time to learn the process of each step, as well as repeat as many as six or more practice pieces  for each type of projects. American Jewelers Institute has gained a reputation among  international jewelry schools with students coming from countries such as  Germany, Brazil, Canada, Italy, Japan, and many other Asian countries.

Jewelry repair:

Jewelry repair and restoration is an art, requiring patience and skill. Our jewelry school classes teach you the techniques used in the jewelry trade to properly size rings using standards set by  Jewelers of American NY.

Re-tipping with wire and hard solder is practiced until you are adept and proficient. Chain repairs such as soldering breaks, and replacing clasps are also covered.

Stone Setting:

This jewelry trade schools program will in  four  months build your  skills to a "level one bench jeweler", capable of sizing rings, doing repairs on customers rings, pendants, earring, chains etc. You will also have the skills to properly set colored stones as well as diamonds. Stones can be set in a variety of ways, prongs, bezels, channels, hammer set, burnished, bead setting, or pin setting. Our jewelry schools training will enable you to create jewelry with a variety of choices in your designs.
