Commonly asked Questions ... ?

Q:        What kind of metals will be used on the projects?

A:            Because of the number of projects needed we will be practicing with Sterling Silver, Nickel, and Merlin’s Gold. The number of projects completed through the course makes the cost prohibitive to use karat gold through out, so we have elected to use a metal similar in hardness. Some students elect to use real gold on certain projects. Students may either purchase this material from us or use their own gold.

Q:        What age group attending our jewelry school?

A:        We have students of all ages, from young people just out of high school, to people looking at something to do in their retirement. Many students are in their mid 30’s to late 40’s looking for a second career either by choice or forced to make a change to something less physically demanding or stressful as a result of injury.

Q:        What is the pay scale and job opportunities in the jewelry industry?

A:            American Jewelers Institute has always experienced a high rate of placement for our students. Jewelers call from all over the country for well-trained entry level bench jewelers to work in their stores and shops. Entry-level positions start between $8.00 and $15.00 per hour, usually with benefits included. Journeyman pay in the general Portland area is between $16.00 and $25.00 depending on expertise. Lifetime placement assistance is provided to our graduate students.

Q:        What qualifications are required to attend?

A:        Many people think to become a jeweler you must first be a great artist, this could not be further from the truth. Desire to create fine jewelry, an “eye for detail,” desire to do quality craftsmanship, and the ability to work with ones hands is most important.
